Where you go
–
Saltwater fishing trips are available in all coastal sections of
Alaska. Captains generally pursue halibut and salmon, though charters
for other species, such as rockfish and salmon shark are also
available. Guided river fishing for salmon and trout is available on
the Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay region, the Kenai peninsula, the Mat-Su valley, and in other scattered
locations across the state.
|
What You
Catch –
Halibut and salmon is available in salt water almost year round
in Alaska, though most charters are limited to the summer
months. Salmon availability changes in salt water as fish
prepare to head upstream to spawn. King salmon are available in
May and June in salt water, and into July in some locations in
fresh water.
|
Red salmon runs are typically in June and July, and Silvers in
late July through September. Trout fishing is available from
spring to fall, with some restrictions in May and June, as the
fish spawn.
|
What You
Eat –
Food choices vary from captain
to captain, and guide to guide. Many do not provide any food or
drinks at all, and others provide complete meals. Fishing lodges
often provide complete meal services. You should check with your
guide, captain or travel consultant about the specifics of your
trip.
What You Bring –
Charters and guides provide all
of the tackle and lures and bait that you’ll need for your trip.
Some guests may want to bring their own equipment, depending on
the situation. You should always prepare for inclement weather,
and rain gear and layered clothing is a must. A camera is a
great idea, so that you can get photos of the one that didn’t
get away!
